What is Management?

          The word ‘Management’ is formed with the combination of three words, i.e. manage-men-t which means to manage human resources tactfully for achieving organizational goals. If we have to define management then we can say that management is the process of managing the human resources and get the work done from them. For getting the work done from them, managers have to perform different managerial activities. Those activities are planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and controlling.

In other words, Management is the process of getting things done through others with the help of some basic managerial activities like planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and controlling.

According to Koontz O` Donnel

          “Management is the art of getting things done through and with people in formally organized groups.”

According to James L. Lundy

          “Management is principally the task of planning, coordinating, motivating and controlling the efforts of others towards a specific objective.”

Goal-Oriented

Every organization established to achieve certain goals. They should manage the organizational resources and perform managerial activities like planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling to achieve the goals. The goals of each organization differ from one another. The goal is two types firstly is services motive and secondly is profit motive. It may differ from organization to organization. All the activities performed by the organization’s employee, the manager is for predefined goals attaintment.

Universal Activity

Management is the universal activities because management concepts, assumption and it`s principle is applicable in everywhere (like household, small or big organization, etc). The process of management is different from place to place but the basic principle of management is the same.

Group Activity

Management principle is applicable where a group of people is working together to achieve a particular goal. In other words, we can say that the management principle is applicable in a team, class, or section of people who involve in various activities to achieve a common goal.

Dynamic Activity

Management known as dynamic activities or modifiable activities. In other words, The management system should be changeable in nature. The management of today is not applicable for tomorrow. So, management has to modify its style according to time and situation otherwise, the organization is not adjusting to the changing business environment. For example; kodak. It is a company that can’t change itself with changing environment. As a result, it gets bankrupt on September 3, 2013.

Social Process

Organizations established growth and expansion in society. So, management has to bear the social responsibility. It has to fulfill all the objectives of stakeholders. It has to provide employment opportunities to society people or use the resources available in the society etc.

Distinct Process

Management is the distinct process or specific process of managing the resources of the organization. Management should use human resources, raw materials, or other resources effectively and efficiently. So, the output is more than the input.

Multi-Disciplinary in nature

Management is multi-disciplinary in nature. Many of the principles and techniques used in management borrowed from a number of other disciplines like psychology, sociology, economics, and mathematics. So, managers have all this knowledge to manage the organization.

Science, Art and Profession

Science:- the basic principle of management is based on scientific experiments and observation. They apply to all types of organizations in today’s world. It deals with the people and their behavior. So, it is known as Social Science.

Art:-  A artist has a foresight vision of the picture they are going to make. Similarly, managers need creativity, process, and foresight vision about the outcomes of what they are performing. For this purpose, managers have to play the role of Artists.

Profession:– a profession defined as an occupation of specialized knowledge that provides services to the people by charging a short fee. Similarly, managers also have specialized knowledge about the principle of management. So, they can direct, suggest the employee perform their job assigned to them in an effective and efficient way.
